2. Mark up centrally and vertically where you want the banger placed. Around eye level is usual. The banger is the smallest part that the ring knocker sits in.
3. Use the brass mirror screw provided to fix the banger in place. There is a brass cap for the mirror screw, which can be put on using the back end of a pencil eraser or some double-sided tape. It is to cover the screw-head. Mirror screws are weaker than regular screws due to the hole down the centre, so take care not to over-tighten, or the head might snap off. You can also use a standard counter sunk wood screw to attach the banger.
4. With the banger in place, put the hinge of the knocker ring into the backplate. Place the knocker ring in the banger, with the backplate now sited on the door.
The backplate has notches to help line it up horizontally and vertically. Mark on the tape the four holes in the back plate before removing and preparing to drill.
Drill all four holes centrally with a small pilot drill (up to about 2.5mm in diameter or 3/32”) and remove the masking tape.
5. Screw the four stainless steel wood screws through the backplate into the door. These screws will also work on plastic (UPVC). The pilot holes should be no more than 20mm deep. You can use a bit of tape on the drill bit to mark the approximate depth required.
6. With the backplate in place and the knocker ring in place in the backplate hinge, the head can be fitted. The hook within the head should sit within the square hole on the back plate and when flush against the wall, can be pushed up a few millimetres for the hook to engage the backplate.
7. With one hand, hold the head and ring knocker in place, continue to put pressure upwards on the head and with the same hand, lift the ring knocker off the door.
8. Place the stainless steel M4 screw on the Allen key's long end and lift it between the door and the lifted ring knocker, inserting it into the hole at the bottom of the head.
9. Turn the screw anti-clockwise to tighten it into the bottom of the back plate, keeping the 127mm long Allen key as parallel with the door as possible.
10. When the screw is tightened, the Allen key can be removed and the hand taken away from the head and ring knocker.
